National Indian Health Board’s 40th Anniversary Celebration and 29th Annual Consumer Conference

You are invited to attend the National Indian Health Board’s (NIHB) 40th Anniversary Celebration and 29th Annual Consumer Conference (ACC). The 2012 conference will be held in Denver, Colorado at the Sheraton Denver Downtown from September 24 to 27, 2012, with some fantastic pre- and post- conference events.

This year’s NIHB ACC will bring together Tribal leaders, Tribal health administrators, area health boards, health care professionals, and individuals together to discuss successes, challenges, opportunities, and the future of health care for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) people.

Many activities will also be occurring during, pre-, and post-conference including:
  • Tribal Consultations conducted by federal agencies such as the Health Resources and Services Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, and other federal agencies
  • 2nd Annual Native Youth Track
  • Pow Wow – including dancing, food, vendors, and a special recognition ceremony of our Veterans
We are excited to offer potential plenary and workshop topics such as:
  • Medicare/Medicaid Changes as a result of the Affordable Care Act
  • Health Care Reform Implementation, including legal considerations in health care reform implementation, regulatory concerns and their impact on Tribal Health
  • Youth Health including Suicide Prevention and Childhood Obesity Prevention
  • Diabetes, Special Diabetes Program for Indians
  • Behavioral Health
  • Federal/Tribal/State Relations
  • Health Information Technology and Electronic Medical Records
  • Public Health Issues – Accreditation, Tribal Programs that increase health promotion/disease prevention, Preparedness, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Winnable Battles

Theme: Youth Voice, Youth Vision: Building Stronger Healthier Communities

Who: Native Youth, aged 13-17 with chaperones!

The National Indian Health Board (NIHB), the Center for Native American Youth (CNAY), and Health Native Community Partnerships (HNCP), and United National Indian Tribal Youth (UNITY) invites Native youth from around the country to join our Native Youth track at the 29th Annual Consumer Conference (ACC) and 40th Year Anniversary to involve Native youth in the national discussion on AI/AN health and wellness.

This track will assist youth in telling their story of health and wellness in their community using Digital Media and Storytelling. This track will support the Native Youth Healthcare Advisory Council to assist the NIHB and other partners in developing youth-guided strategies for suicide and obesity prevention.

General Information

Conference Goals:

  • To honor youth and their ability to transform our communities in a positive way,
  • To raise the profile of the youth health disparities in American Indian/Alaska Native communities,
  • To establish a Native Youth Health Advisory Council to assist the NIHB and other partners in developing youth-guided strategies for suicide and obesity prevention, and
  • Native Youth Workshops on Suicide and Obesity
  • To provide youth the knowledge and skills to achieve healthy and balanced lives.
