Hualapai Tribe

HICI Activities

"Local IHS (2006) and Hualapai Diabetes Program (2007) records reveal that among adults >18 years of age, > 43% have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus. "

The Hualapai Tribe has a 992,463 acre reservation, located in northwest Arizona along the south rim of the Grand Canyon. The 2000 Tribal census reports 1,928 residents (approximately 40% males, 60% females) living on the reservation, with 56% under the age of 16 years.

Local IHS (2006) and Hualapai Diabetes Program (2007) records reveal that among adults >18 years of age, > 43% have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM); and 30% of DM patients have cardiovascular disease or significant risk factors, such as high blood pressure.

In recent years, the age of DM diagnosis has declined. The average age at diagnosis is < 40 years and among adults >18 years of age, > 43% have been diagnosed with DM.

The Hualapai Tribe's Healthy Indian Country Initiative (HICI) project encompassed four events/activities:
