Care Giving in the Absence of an Adult—
Lac Vieux Desert Band
of Lake Superior Chippewa

About the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa

The Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa has a Tribal membership of about 609 with about 480 living on the reservation.

The Tribe is located in a rural area of the Northwoods where distance restricts any instant responses. Communication can be a cell phone users' nightmare and the nearest hospital or ambulance response is at least 30 minutes or 30 miles. The climate is harsh and can create a home-bound, powerless situation within minutes. For example, 36 inches of snow fell within 24 hours in May of 2009.
