The First Meeting of the American Indian and Alaska Native Health Research Advisory Council was held on May 16-18, 2006. It was decided that the HRAC Council would be established to provide the Department of Health and Human Services a venue for consulting with Tribes about health research priorities and needs in AI/AN communities and collaborative approaches in addressing these issues and needs. The goal of this committee is to improve the health research outcomes and substantially increase the delivery and health status of all AI/AN people.

The Health Research Advisory Council serves three primary functions:

  1. Obtaining input from tribal leaders on health research priorities and needs for their communities.
  2. Providing a forum through which HHS operating and staff divisions can better communicate and coordinate AI/AN health research activities.
  3. Providing a conduit for disseminating information to Tribes about research findings from studies focusing on the health of AI/AN populations.

HRAC Delegate Vacancies

We currently have HRAC Delegate vacancies for the following areas: Aberdeen, Albuquerque, Bemidji and Billings. A letter has been sent out to the Tribal Leaders in these areas asking for nominations, but we would also like your assistance in sharing this with colleagues that may have an interest in health research issues as well. I am attaching a list of Tribes in each area as well as a copy of the letter that went out for your convenience. The deadline for submitting nominations is September 28. If you have any questions please let me know.

The Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) is seeking nominations of qualified candidates to be considered for appointment as members of the Secretary's Advisory Committee on Human Research Protections (SACHRP).

SACHRP provides advice and recommendations to the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Assistant Secretary for Health of HHS on matters pertaining to the continuance and improvement of functions within the authority of HHS directed toward protections for human research participants. Nominations for membership on SACHRP must be received no later than Oct 9. There are two vacancies for positions that would start in March 2013.

There are currently no individuals from community-based organizations or community IRBs/research review boards or tribal IRBs/community organizations on SACHRP and we'd like to see that change! (They haven't announced the outcome of the last call for nominations back in February). We at CCPH are more than happy to support you if you decide to apply for any leadership position (eg, providing advice, commenting on draft applications, etc) and please feel free to use this listserv to reach out to fellow forum participants for that purpose!
