Approach

Advancing Health Equity and Sovereignty

At NIHB, our approach to public health in Indian Country is rooted in respect for Tribal sovereignty and the belief that culture is a powerful source of healing. We collaborate with Tribal Advisory Committees to ensure federal agencies understand and effectively support the unique needs of Tribal Nations. Our work includes educating both Tribes and those who serve them, fostering mutual understanding and stronger partnerships. Guided by Tribal resolutions, we advocate for policies and initiatives that align with the priorities of Indian Country. Additionally, we connect Tribes with funding opportunities through grants to empower communities to address health challenges and promote well-being. Together, these efforts form a comprehensive approach to advancing health equity and self-determination in Indian Country.

Resolutions

Our organization’s resolutions play a pivotal role in guiding our advocacy efforts. These resolutions, approved by our Board, direct our work to address health disparities for American Indian and Alaska Natives. They call on government agencies, policymakers, and other stakeholders to take specific actions, such as enacting laws, providing funding, or implementing policies that improve healthcare access and outcomes. Through these resolutions, we ensure that the voices and needs of our People are central to the conversation about health equity and justice.

Tribal Advisory Committees

The National Indian Health Board (NIHB) provides support and policy expertise to Tribal Advisory Committees (TAC). TACs are established to enhance nation-to-nation relationships, honor federal trust responsibilities and obligations to Tribes and American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) people and increase understanding between federally recognized Tribes and federal agencies.

Education

NIHB is dedicated to providing comprehensive education to enhance understanding and collaboration in Indian Country. We offer specialized training on working with Tribes— focusing on Tribal sovereignty, cultural competency, and the unique needs of Native communities. Our education programs also include training on navigating the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), helping Tribes and health leaders optimize access to vital health resources and funding. Additionally, we provide public health training to strengthen Tribal capacity in areas such as health promotion, disease prevention, and emergency preparedness. Through these efforts, we aim to equip stakeholders with the knowledge and tools to support and advance the health of Tribal Nations.
