Aroostook Band of MicMac

Funding made possible by the SDPI has made the Micmac Service Unit’s (MSU) efforts to treat and prevent Type 2 Diabetes successful. The MSU has increased its target population with an A1C <8.0 from 64%, in 2013, to 70%, in 2014. One diabetic patient had weighed 385 lbs with an A1C of 8.2 in January 2014. With the help of clinic staff, to date this patient now weights 350 lbs with an A1C of 6.7. SDPI funds have also contributed to “increasing both healthy eating and physical activity behaviors in Micmac youth ages 12-18”. This being one of the Best Practice: Youth Type 2 Diabetes Treatment and Prevention required key measurements the Micmac Service Unit have seen an increase from 52%, in 2013, to 75% in 2014 in both healthy eating and physical activity.

Purchased with SDPI funds, the InBody 230 Analyzer records weight, skeletal muscle mass, fat, total body water and percent body fat. Using the body analyzer with all youth that participate in the MSUs activities, clinic staff can determine which youth have a BMI equal or greater than the 85th percentile. This turns our attention on youth that need to be screened for pre-diabetes/diabetes and more healthy eating/fitness education. Over the course of a year by collecting this data we can focus on individual youth by encouraging and educating them to eat healthier and be more active. In December of 2013 one youth had a body fat percentage of 42.6%. A year later, with help from clinic staff working with this youth their new body fat percentage was 40.8%, December of 2014.
