On April 6, the Department of Health, and Human Services (HHS) released a Dear Tribal Leader Letter informing Tribes of the newly updated Strategic Plan for Fiscal Years 2022-2026. You can access the Strategic Plan at this website: Strategic Plan FY 2022 – 2026 | HHS.gov
Overall, this plan has five Strategic Goals which are highlighted. These goals include
- Protecting and Strengthening Equitable Access to High Quality and Affordable Healthcare.
- Safeguarding and Improving National and Global Health Conditions and Outcomes.
- Strengthening Social Well-Being, Equity, and Economic Resilience.
- Restoring Trust and Accelerating Advancements in Science and Research for All.
- Advancing Strategic Management to Build Trust, Transparency, and Accountability.
In creating this plan, the Department held three events for Tribal leaders and members to attend and provide input. Relating to input from Tribal leaders at these events, HHS extended its comment deadline to January 19, 2022, and on January 13, 2022, the last Consultation session was held with Secretary Becerra.
The Department states in the letter that this updated Strategic Plan responds to recommendations from Tribes and Tribal organizations to reflect the specific health and human service needs of American Indians and Alaska Natives such as focusing on maternal health, behavioral health, economic opportunity, and addressing trauma.
