On May 6, 2022 the Indian Health Service (IHS) released an announcement on the appointment of a new Deputy Director. Ben Smith, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, has been selected and will serve to foster and support collaboration between the Tribes and IHS to increase the access of quality health programs to all American Indian and Alaska Natives. Mr. Smith has served as the Deputy Director of Intergovernmental Affairs at IHS headquarters for seven years where he was instrumental in the implementation of Title I and Title V authorities under the Indian Self Determination and Education Assistance Act along with Title V of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act.
While looking for a new Deputy Director of Intergovernmental Affairs, the Director of the Office of Urban Indian Health Programs will serve as the acting Deputy Director.
