SDPI: Changing The Course of Diabetes

Diabetes and Costly Complications Reduced

The 2017 fact sheet highlights the Special Diabetes Program for Indians (SDPI), established in 1997 by Congress to combat the diabetes epidemic in Native American communities. With $150 million in annual funding, the program serves 780,000 individuals across 35 states, achieving significant health milestones, including a 54% reduction in kidney failure rates and a 50% decrease in diabetic eye disease rates, while stabilizing obesity and diabetes rates in youth over the past decade.
