Public health policy plays a critical role in improving the health and well-being of American Indian and Alaska Native communities. Key areas of focus include Tribal Health Data, Public Health Law, and Health Equity—each of which informs our work in advocating for policies that address the unique needs of Tribal Nations and promote long-term health outcomes.
Data is a powerful tool for change, and it is essential that health data reflect the unique needs of Tribal communities. Efforts are focused on ensuring Tribal health data is collected, analyzed, and used to empower Tribes in making informed decisions about health programs and policies.
Accurate and comprehensive health data enables Tribes to track health trends, identify disparities, and advocate for resources needed to improve public health outcomes.
Public health law is essential for protecting the rights of Native communities and ensuring health systems are just, effective, and accessible. Advocacy and legal action focus on shaping public health laws at the federal, state, and local levels to reflect the needs and rights of Tribal Nations. Policies are pushed that respect Tribal sovereignty, enhance health care delivery, and ensure equitable access to health services.
Health equity is central to the work of improving health outcomes for Native communities. Every person, regardless of background or circumstance, deserves access to the care and services needed to live a healthy life. This includes addressing the social, economic, and environmental factors that influence health and eliminating health disparities in Native communities.
A Vision for the Future
Strengthening public health law, advocating for better Tribal health data, and advancing health equity will help create a future where Native communities have the tools, resources, and support to thrive.
Together, these efforts will build systems of care that honor the health, culture, and sovereignty of Indian Country.
