Education

NIHB is dedicated to providing comprehensive education to enhance understanding and collaboration in Indian Country. We offer specialized training on working with Tribes— focusing on Tribal sovereignty, cultural competency, and the unique needs of Native communities. Our education programs also include training on navigating the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), helping Tribes and health leaders optimize access to vital health resources and funding. Additionally, we provide public health training to strengthen Tribal capacity in areas such as health promotion, disease prevention, and emergency preparedness. Through these efforts, we aim to equip stakeholders with the knowledge and tools to support and advance the health of Tribal Nations.

Indian Health 101

Indian Health 101 is an essential training designed to provide a foundational understanding of the unique relationship between American Indian Tribes and the U.S. government regarding health care.

The National Indian Health Board (NIHB), in partnership with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), is hosting the CMS ITU 2026 Trainings.

These important trainings help Indian Health Service (IHS), Tribal, and Urban Indian (ITU) programs maximize their ability to access third-party resources through Medicare, Medicaid, and the Health Insurance Marketplace, and are designed to strengthen Tribal health programs.

Reports

The National Indian Health Board (NIHB) provides a variety of resources to support Indian Country in various public health capacities.

Working With Tribes

The Working with Tribes Training project and its resulting e-course are intended to educate state and federal government officials on effective engagement with American Indian and Alaska Native Tribes.

Arizona State University Indigenous Health Research Dashboard

The Indigenous Health Research Dashboard is an online platform for exploring published research studies, currently focused on contemporary research since 2000 to the present, updating regularly, on diseases and conditions that significantly impact Indigenous health.

Academics, researchers, and any other interested community members can use the database to visualize broad trends across the research at large, identify unique data points from specific articles (e.g. sample size or tribal communities), or gain access to specific publications directly via the “List of Publications” tab.
