Upholding the Sacred Trust: Honoring Tribal Sovereignty in Nation-to-Nation Relations

The relationship between Tribal Nations and the United States is political and it is a sacred trust, rooted in historic treaties and agreements that helped form the foundation of this country It is NIHB’s mission to ensure that the U.S. Government honors its obligations to Tribal Nations, both today and in the future. Central to this trust is the recognition and respect for Tribal sovereignty and self-determination. Every law and policy must uphold the right of Tribes to govern themselves, care for their people, and protect their lands. Our work focuses on ensuring these rights are not only acknowledged but actively supported by federal law and policy.
