Federal Advocacy

Introduction

Located on of Capitol Hill, the National Indian Health Board (NIHB) is a powerful voice for Tribal Governments and American Indian/Alaska Native communities when it comes to healthcare and public health advocacy. We relentlessly advocate for quality, sustainable healthcare by holding Congress accountable to the federal trust responsibility for American Indian and Alaskan Native health. Our team tracks and influences key legislation, leads impactful discussions on healthcare reform, provides critical analysis of the Indian Health Service budget, and supports increasing public health programming and infrastructure for Tribal communities. NIHB ensures Tribes and their advocates are equipped with the latest, most accurate information on federal action affecting Native healthcare and public health.

NIHB Legislative Agenda: Advancing Health and Sovereignty

The NIHB Legislative and Policy Agenda outlines our key priorities to advance the health and well-being of American Indian and Alaska Native communities, as set forth by our Board each calendar year. This agenda guides NIHB’s efforts to educate policymakers, secure resources, and support Tribes in strengthening health systems. Core principles include upholding the federal trust responsibility, promoting health equity, advocating for full funding for the Indian health system, improving physical infrastructure for IHS and Tribal facilities, and supporting public health and public health infrastructure, while integrating traditional healing practices into the healthcare framework.
