DescriptionThis presentation will explore American Indian and Alaska Native maternal health in Washington State, centering both the realities of inequity and the strength of Tribal leadership. Participants will learn about maternal mortality disparities affecting AI/AN families, and the historical and present-day systems that have shaped physical, mental, social, and emotional health outcomes in Indigenous communities. The session will highlight why Tribally led approaches are essential to healing, self-determination, and lasting change. Attendees will also engage with the 22 Tribal leader recommendations and reflect on how these teachings can guide maternal and infant health work within their own Tribes and organizations. 

Learning Objectives:  

  1. Understand American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) maternal mortality disparities in Washington State. 
  2. Understand the historical and current contributing factors leading to chronic physical, mental,socialand emotional health disparities in AI/AN communities.  
  3. Understand the critical importance of Tribally led work in healing AI/AN communities. 
  4. Reflect on the importance of the 22 Tribal leader recommendations and how they can influence MIH work in their Tribes and organizations.
